Brief History:
The "St Andrews of Ireland" started when a few Scotsmen on a visit to the Cliffs of Moher spotted the duneland 2 miles away. They knew good links land when they saw it. Officials from Limerick Golf Club then went out and an 18 hole course was marked out. The first game of golf took place on Friday the 15th of April 1892. Old Tom Morris of St Andrews was brought in to design the course at the expense of Alexander Shaw who was the President of the course at the time (and ran the butchers that are still in existence and internationally known to this day for their meats) . In 1927 Dr Alister Mackenzie (who was soon to design Augusta and Cypress Point in the USA) came in and made a few adjustments. He thought that the course will be the "Finest and most popular course ever constructed". He wasn't far wrong. One competition that has been a permanent fixture in Lahinch is the South of Ireland Amateur Championships. Held first in 1895 it's the 2nd oldest amateur championship in Ireland. It brings all the best Irish golfers along with good golfers from further a field to the west coast. The dominant force of the South of Ireland was a Lahinch member called John Burke. He managed to win the tournament 11 times between 1928-1946 including an amazing 6 in a row between 1941-1946. Ryder Cup star and Irish Open winner John O'Leary won in 1970, Darren Clarke won it in 1990, Paul McGinley won in 1991, current up and coming tour Pro Graham McDowell was victorious in 2000 and one who didn't get his name on the trophy was Open Champion Padraig Harrington who finished runner up in the "South" on 2 occasions. To this day the course is regularly visited by top class golfers especially in the weeks before the British Open so that they can get some practice on a top quality links golf course.
